The quirky journalists over at The Truth About Cars take it upon themselves to review the upcoming Saturn Astra. Interesting that this new car marks the first time that anyone that cares a lick about cars has given a Saturn a second look (appologies to my friends at Saturn's ad agency of record).
It's interesting because the lords at General Motors have decided that the Saturn brand has something going for it-- not in their vehicles, but in their customer loyalty and easy buying experience. So the GM management have elected to rebuild the nameplate's lineup entirely from cars from GM's German subsidiary, Adam Opel. An Interesting strategy, it just might work.
For a long time Opel got to operate fairly independently from the GM Marketing hacks, and those of us vising Europe would always be impressed by the Opel stuff we saw on the streets. The cars didn't blow you away, but they were a little distinctive.
If only this Saturn can actually operate with a little independence, maybe with completely decentralized marketing... maybe.... maybe Saturn will be able to earn some real credibility with value car shoppers. If they are successful, look for the equally impressive european Ford products to start showing up under the Mercury badge.
