MCA

Beastie Boys

I'm quite sad about the death of Adam Yuach, who went by MCA.  For several generations of music fans, this group provided a soundtrack for our teenage years and 20s. And let's be honest, our 30's.

Everyone remembers "You've Got to Fight For Your Right to Party," from '86. I distinctly remember taking about this album at my friend Jordan's house on Grizzly Peak Road in Berkeley in 7th grade. It seemed important. And then I remember "So What'cha Want" being taught to 7 year olds when I was a camp counselor. It doesn't translate to call-and-response so well.

Many of the remembrances for MCA are personal. He and the two other Beastie Boys had a big impact on a lot of people of a certain age.

Sasha Frere Jones shares personal memories of growing up with the Beasties, and with the impact of their music.

Canadian Alan Cross lists 10 reasons why the Beastie Boys matter to him, including one reason that is simply that they alienated Madonna fans by opening for her Like a Virgin tour.
