Reading about the life of Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, I'm struck by his longevity (of course!), and also his deep, self-taught respect for the U.S. Constitution.
Over 50-plus years in congress, he came to be a protector of the history and institutions of government.
Here's his 2003 speech protesting the Bush Administration's march to war in Iraq, where he talks about these ideals, and how the institution of the Senate should fight to stop it.
He really lets it rip in part 2.
