Blog Posts I Wrote When I was Interviewing at Flickr...

That don't embarrass me looking back...

What Is Flickr?
That's a question I've been thinking about in the last couple of weeks. It's the web's premier photo sharing application, of course.

I guess I'm asking the question in respect to where the service is going? As Yahoo's most successful sub-brand, how will it evolve to serve its customers while also serving Yahoo's goals.

I see three possible paths...

1. Best in class web photography application

2. Best in class user generated media community

3. Evolve into something broader still. Perhaps Flickr could be Yahoo's first successful social network. Could it be a facebook-fighter.

Here are some of the building blocks to think about if you're looking to build and maintain a relevant media service on the web these days:

Think about Consumers and Producers. While it's critical to get people to upload content (the producers), it's equally important to focus on how people find cool stuff (the consumers). Discovery in social media is so much more than search: it's slideshows, maps, friend summaries and all sorts of other interfaces as-yet-undefined.
