Metropolitan

Park Avenue looking south, originally uploaded by sbest2048.

I'm watching Whit Stillman's Metropolitan tonight-- I always remember that this is one of my favorite movies whenever I see it.

I wish I could quantify why I like it so much-- it's the sharp humor, the look into the alien world of Upper East Side Wasps, the magical view of a certain part of New York in 1990, all of these things.

It only now occurs to me that this movie is why the Upper East side holds so much allure to me. For just about everyone else I know, it's a boring part of town. But I remember the magic of walking up Park and Madison from work to my railroad flat on east 89th. There was something of this movie in those walks.

Wow, you're making me really want to see this movie again. I was absolutely obsessed with it when I first saw it, and I immediately developed a mad crush on both Stillman and the awesome Chris Eigeman. I love Stillman's meditative style -- kind of slow, deliberate, and almost cold. Ok, now I also want to see Kicking and Screaming again, too (I know it's not Stillman, but it's Eigeman and sort of the same style but funnier).
