But the news stories of the past few weeks have made me more and more discouraged. First, Hillary Clinton has gone negative against her Democratic opponent. And Barack Obama has followed her. Then, Hillary Clinton and John McCain have proposed a temporary suspension of the Federal Gasoline tax, you know, for the kids. Any sound policy maker of any party would tell you that this is actually the wrong direction to go in order to address our nation's current energy position. And oh yeah, Barack Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright has gone from being a stylized political liability to a catastrophically heavy anchor, tied to the candidate's neck, pulling.
And so where are the issues? Why are we are talking about these things instead of the big challenges facing this country.
1. The War in Iraq. A deepening disaster for the Nation, with no clear path out.
2. An economic crisis, tied to collapsing housing market and the investment banks.
3. Health Care, and an impending fiscal crisis around these balooining costs and retiring baby boomers.
4. Climate Change and rising energy costs, 2 compounding worldwide issues.
5. All that other stuff this nation likes to fight about-- guns, abortion, civil liberties, terrorism.
When we as voters, and we as media consumers talk the political horse race, a suspension of the gasoline task or some outrageous African American preachers, we're not talking about these big issues.
Whose fault is that?
