These are my last hours in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. Tomorrow I pack up and head back to Buenos Aires, where I´ll spend my last few days abroad.
Last night it rained in Barilche, but what I didn´t realize until today was that there was snow at the high peaks nearby. The Porteñno I met on the mountain today told me that snow was quite exceptional for February in the southern hemisphere.
In the end, I think this part of Argentina suits me more than Buenos Aires. Despite the crowds of Bariloche, waking up to these views reminds me of past times in the Sierra Nevada. I hope to come back to this place soon, and perhaps have time to explore a bit more widely.
On the english language reading front, I have given Thomas Friedman´s book ¨From Beruit to Jerusalem¨a bit more time, and it´s gotten better. Chapter 4, ¨Hamas Rules,¨uses the brutality of Syria´s Hafez al-Assad in 1982 Syria to talk about why authoritarianism has such a history (and effectiveness) in the middle east. I wish Paul Wolfowitz had been reading this in 2003, but he wasn´t.
wonderful photos Shanan. Thanks for posting them. I will have to get out of here and explore the world during my summers off.
